Celebrating Grandpa’s birthday on Thursday was already great, but this song was a highlight.

Snow, ice and hail in Moorpark, California today
hero tailor of Rheinfelden (Switzerland)
This bells and video are worth posting here instead of Facebook or YouTube to avoid compressed resolution and maintain quality. The story reminds me of hero stories in the Bible.
“There is a story from the 30 years war (1618 to 1648), when Rheinfelden was under siege by Swedish troops. When all the food reserves were exhausted, a small tailor killed the last goat and dressed himself with its fur, then walked around the town walls making baas. Believing the city to have plentiful supplies whilst they were living on the diminishing supplies off the land in lateautumn, the Swedish abandoned the siege. The story is celebrated by a glockenspiel and animation in the Rumple, a small square in the town.”

Rattlesnake slowly retreats, Happy Camp, Moorpark, CA
Snakes of all types had been less active over the past couple years for some reason. Not just snakes – all wildlife was less active. I’m not sure why. My outdoor activity in the area has remained fairly constant over the past couple years. Suddenly, this year on my rides I’m seeing a lot more wildlife than last year, and the previous year, which is more consistent with my experience in previous years. The video below shows one rattlesnake I saw today. There were also fresh snake “tracks” all over the road I went on. On my way out of Happy Camp, I saw a coyote wandering around the golf course area. A couple weeks ago, my wife saw fresh bear tracks in the river bottom area (above, after forking left). Bear tracks are very rare in the area. Check out the Moorpark Community facebook page for that post. This increase in wildlife activity could be due to worsening drought conditions.
Sisar – White Ledge Loop, Ventura County
4-30-2022 I parked at the grocery store where Sisar Rd starts on Highway 150, rode up to the ridge, turned right towards the bluffs, then turned right to go down White Ledge. White Ledge is rough on the top half, but the bottom half (campsite to end of the singletrack) seems to have been maintained this year. Sisar Road was maintained by the forest service in the past month but isn’t super torn up. Its actually faster now. The video is from the top half of White Ledge. The snake was on the bottom half of the Sisar ascent, about 100 feet up from the 2nd water crossing. Note the snake has stripes on its tail half, and diamonds on its head half.
