Snakes of all types had been less active over the past couple years for some reason. Not just snakes – all wildlife was less active. I’m not sure why. My outdoor activity in the area has remained fairly constant over the past couple years. Suddenly, this year on my rides I’m seeing a lot more wildlife than last year, and the previous year, which is more consistent with my experience in previous years. The video below shows one rattlesnake I saw today. There were also fresh snake “tracks” all over the road I went on. On my way out of Happy Camp, I saw a coyote wandering around the golf course area. A couple weeks ago, my wife saw fresh bear tracks in the river bottom area (above, after forking left). Bear tracks are very rare in the area. Check out the Moorpark Community facebook page for that post. This increase in wildlife activity could be due to worsening drought conditions.
